The Thai Burma Border Health Initiative (TBBHI http://tbbhi.org) is sponsoring Mountainfilm as a fundraiser for the third year in a row. TBBHI provides vital health care services to persecuted ethnic minorities living along the border between Thailand and Burma. Physicians from Gallup Indian Medical Center started TBBHI ten years ago. Support from the Gallup community continues to be vital to its ability to provide over 10,000 visits per year to more than 5,000 people. The region is very remote and TBBHI workers are often the only health care providers able to reach villages year round. This year TBBHI is specifically raising funds for a vehicle to replace our current truck, which is critical to our mission.
Tickets for the event will be $8 for adults and $5 for children (12 and under). Tickets will be available at the door or in advance at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mountainfilm-on-tour-in-gallup-tickets-58972240559
Mountainfilm will be holding educational events at both Gallup High School and Jefferson Elementary School earlier in the day on May 3rd as well. Whenever and wherever Mountainfilm is on tour, the aim is to educate and inspire beyond the theater audiences. Mountainfilm for Students is a free educational outreach initiative that introduces students in K-12 public schools to essential environmental, cultural and social issues with age-appropriate film programs. These events are led by professional educational staff from the Mountainfilm organization working with teachers in the schools to bring home the powerful messages of the films.
Mountainfilm began in 1979 and is one of America’s longest-running film festivals. The festival is best described by one word: inspiring. In addition to screening leading independent documentary films from around the world, the festival includes a full-day symposium on a contemporary issues, art and photography exhibits, early morning coffee talks, outdoor programs, a book-signing party, an ice cream social, student programs and a closing picnic/awards ceremony. Presentations and panels are scheduled throughout the weekend event with a wide diversity of special guests, ranging from artists to adventurers and academics to activists.
