Our Navajo Nation has been exploited by outside corporations before -- and it will happen again and keep happening unless we, the People, voice our concerns…

Wall Street’s Avenue Capital wants to try to squeeze the Navajo Generating Station for their own profit – and then run back to their fancy offices in New York.

The Navajo Generating Station is scheduled to close because energy like solar and wind are now cheaper.

That means Avenue Capital will likely try to cut worker pay and hours -- and cut corners on safety and health – in order to get their short-term corporate gain.

And any new deal on NGS will immediately wipe out all the economic benefits for our Nation that current plant owners have already agreed to. These are vital power line and water resources from the coal plant that we need for building our solar and wind energy economies going forward.

Tell our Navajo Nation Council Delegates not to let Avenue Capital or any corporations get their hands on the Navajo Generating Station and exploit our communities for their outside profit. KGLP Station Manager Rachel Kaub again speaks with GOP Senate candidate Mich Rich, who returned to Gallup recently for a talk.  Mr. Rich is running against New Mexico's Democratic incumbent, Martin Heinrich.

Homes being built for Navajo Vets by SW Indian Foundation and Military

On Thursday, July 12, 2018, KGLP's Trey Chavez spoke with Jeremy Boucher, a director of the Project Office at Southwest Indian Foundation, at SWIF's Gallup, New Mexico warehouse facility, about the organization's 2-decade collaboration with Air Force and, this summer, South Carolina National Guard personnel, to build housing for selected residents of the Navajo Nation, with the focus more recently being on homes for Navajo military veterans.

The goal since April of this year is to provide 10 modular-style houses built by some 40 members of the South Carolina National Guard.

Navajo mysteries author Anne Hillerman coming to Gallup on 7/7/18

KGLP Station Manager Rachel Kaub speaks with author Anne Hillerman, who is continuing a series of novels based on characters and situations featured by her father, Tony Hillerman, in his mysteries, with Navajo officers Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn being among those fictional characters.

 

Ms. Hillerman will be in Gallup, New Mexico on Saturday, July 7, 2018, for events including the film, "A Thief of Time", based on her father's novel, and a talk and panel at the Octavia Fellin Public Library in Gallup.

● The Children’s Branch at 2:00 p.m. welcomes award winning author Ross Van Dusen as part of Gallup’s Big Read celebration. Join Ross on a coloring adventure and experience story making with a master. Voted one of New Mexico’s “Top Ten” favorite New Mexico books of 2017 by the Albuquerque Journal, What Makes Lightning?, awaits your creative exploration.
● El Morro Theatre at 2:30 p.m. special screening of Monster Slayer followed by a Q&A with Nicole Garcia from the Gallup Film Foundation. Monster Slayer is a contemporary retelling of the story of the Hero Twins. ● El Morro Theatre at 3:15 p.m. special screening of A Thief of Time based on the Tony Hillerman novel of the same name. Navajo tribal policeman Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee are back! Leaphorn and Chee are entangled in the mystery of an archaeologist turned pottery poacher who thinks she has cracked the secret of the vanished Anasazi culture, when she herself vanishes. Produced by Robert Redford and Directed by Chris Eyre. Running time: 94 min.

Four Corners people have Health impacts from Methane Release

KGLP Station Manager Rachel Kaub speaks with Dr. Val Wangler, who has practiced medicine in the Navajo Nation and Zuni, discussing the health impacts of increased Methane released into the atmosphere in the Four Corners area, particularly around Farmington, NM.

At this point, the Obama-era Methane Rule, requiring that extracting companies capture methane during the obtaining of oil from U.S. lands, has been rescinded, allowing developers to pollute the air with those emissions.
