On September 16, 2015, UNM-Gallup's LGBTQ Resource Center, aided by LGBTQ Resource Center representatives from the main UNM campus in Albuquerque, held an event at UNMG's Gurley Hall as part of Welcome Back Days.

On September 3, 2015, the Gallup McKinley County Chamber of Commerce hosted a discussion of the Creative Economy in the Gallup area and the state of New Mexico with state and local officials.

KGLP Station Manager Rachel Kaub speaks via Skype with Sheila Weinberg, founder and CEO of Truth in Accounting (http://truthinaccounting.org) about the fact that New Mexico and other states in the Southwest and the rest of the U.S. do not have balanced budgets, despite political statements to the contrary, and that the average New Mexico taxpayer will ultimately be responsible for approximately $10,000 in outstanding state debt.

The McKinley Education Foundation was formed in 2006 to offer the people of McKinley County an avenue through which to support the teachers in the Gallup-McKinley County Schools.

The MEF follows a national trend toward supporting schools from outside the confines of the school district itself. A foundation is separate from the school district and therefore not subject to the same pressures and regulations that might actually hamper certain types of activities designed to assist teachers and help enhance student achievement.

The MEF is a private, non-profit corporation with a Federal IRS 501c3 tax exempt designation, meaning all donations to the foundation are tax deductible. The sole purpose of the foundation is to raise funds to support teachers in the classroom throughout the school district. This will be done via fund raising activities, through direct donations and through grant writing.

Our first fund raiser was held in April, 2007 and we subsequently awarded seven $200 grants to eight teachers from seven schools. Go to Past Grant Recipients to see who has received grants in succeeding years.

The MEF is currently guided by a board of volunteer directors. We are seeking new board members. While several of the current board members are affiliated in some way with the Gallup-McKinley County School System, this Board of Directors is solely responsible for the direction and operation of the Foundation.

Anyone interested in supporting education in the Gallup-McKinley County Schools is welcome to join. There is no cost. Simply contact one of the current board members.

During the week of August 17, 2015, Erin Marshall of the New Mexico Breast Feeding Task Force will be in Gallup, Window Rock, Shiprock, and the surrounding area to speak with Indian Health Service and Navajo Nation officials about how to better support breastfeeding needs.  Erin spoke with KGLP Station Manager Rachel Kaub by Phone about the issues associated with breastfeeding.
